I’m sure you tried any system available to lose those five pounds: you adjusted your diet, you went jogging, perhaps you went as far as to consult a specialist. For people who are contemplating to embark on a weight management program, it is a good idea to start a food log. Do you know that we tend to over-estimate the calories we expend and under-estimate the calories we consume? Have you experienced trying to accelerate your fat loss efforts by working out everyday and eating healthily but just did not get the desired results?

I had this experience some years back. I felt that I was eating healthier and I went to the gym everyday. It was most discouraging and I almost wanted to throw in the towel when the needle moved to the right of the scale instead of the left.

After evaluating what was the next best approach, I reckon its time I needed some help to review what I was doing all these while. I guess it sounded like a good idea to get some help from the professionals. So I took up personal training with the gym and the first thing the trainer did was to take detailed measurements of my weight including fat mass and lean muscle mass (if any) etc.

How many of you will try to determine your weight loss goal first before you kick-start your lose fats exercise? Some people may jump straight into action but I think you may agree with me that it is a good idea to put down your goal in writing after determining your current weight and how much you need to lose. A written goal with a detailed plan to get there will more likely be followed much closely as this will help you put your thoughts into action.

One gentle reminder here, it is always good to be realistic and not be overly ambitious about your goal. You may need to lose 10kg for example. It is not wise to attempt to lose the entire 10kg over one month duration. You will feel utterly disappointed if you did not reach the desired weight and may give up altogether.

I had a colleague some years back, she was overweight and decided it was time to do something. Therefore, she made a pledge to the rest of us in the department (to garner determination I guess), that she intended to lose 10kg within a month. In return, she solicited for rewards upon her achievement like a new bikini. Well, I have to say that it was a good start to realize that she was room to lose some fats off , but she could have gone further to draw up a plan and take action. Unfortunately, she was still snacking on potato chips and helping herself to cakes and pastries for tea break as usual. Needless to say, she was still as fat the last time I saw her.

You see, another advantage of recording down your journey to fat loss is the ability to enable yourself to give a pat on your back every now and then after you achieved the first milestone especially. It is important to keep yourself motivated so that you will continue to put in efforts. The battle of the bulge is a lifetime commitment and not a one off effort. You have to ensure that you are able to sustain long term efforts which is why being motivated is so important.

Now back to the food journal entries, I did this religiously for two weeks and I soon discovered that I had been feasting after my workout session. There is this sub-conscious thought in me that since I had burnt off so much fats earlier, I can allow myself a chicken wing or that packet of fries.

This really made me sit up as post-workout diet is also important as well. If you do not instill enough discipline and pig out after every workout session, it is going to negate all your fat loss efforts. Do we really need to count calories in order to achieve the optimal results from watching out diet? I used to think that having chicken sandwich for lunch is healthy and there was a period of time where I actually had it as lunch almost everyday. It was then I realized that I was actually consuming a lot of fats through the sauce. A better alternative would be mustard and always opt for grilled chicken breast if possible.

The 3rd in line is yogurt. Come on, yogurt is supposed to be a healthy snack with excellent source of calcium, protein and also loaded with live cultures right? Yes, but when it comes to choosing which type of yogurts, go for those with lowest sugar content as some yogurts are high in sugar level which means you will be consuming more calories that will make you fat.

Young Tau Foo seems harmless enough. We are often advised to go for soupy food if we are serious in watching our diet. This is true provided you leave out those fried stuff like “tau pok”, “fried wanton” and the likes. Fried food items again mean that you are consuming more fats that translate into more calories intake.

Finally, fish slice noodles. I think you got it. DO NOT choose fried fish for your fish slice noodles. Some of the dish comes with milk added into the soup. It is best to go for plain soup.

Based on what is being discussed thus far, it is not hard to figure out that the key to choosing what to eat is really based on the method of cooking. You are in control to choose what you want to eat. You may need to make a conscious effort initially to always opt for a healthier alternative.

Just like myself, I will always request for skim milk whenever I need my cuppa fix. This has become a habit due to my conscious effort to always make the request whenever possible. As we all know, old habits die hard, but once you have made a commitment, it won’t be too hard to adopt good eating habits. Start small as every baby steps counts!

Just what is it about losing weight and keeping off the fats so difficult for most of us? I suppose we all know that watching our diet especially fats intake and regular exercise is the tried and tested way to keep yourself lean but why is it that many of us fail to keep to this formula that guarantees a healthy frame and weight?

Do you know what you are eating? Sounds funny? Not quite for me as I obviously did not know what I was putting into my mouth in terms of calorie count. I have listed some food below and let’s see if they sounded like healthy food to you:-

Hands up for those who agree that these are healthy food. Are there any of you hesitant to make a decision? Hey, did I hear you say there is not enough information for you to make a conclusion?

Before I go on any further, let me share with you what I have learnt from a personal trainer some years back. I am a member of a fitness chain and my office used to be located near the gym. There was a period of time where I headed to the gym religiously to work out everyday. You must be thinking that I am probably somebody who cuts a lean silhouette but alas! Not only did I fail to lose the fats I am supposed to, but I actually piled on the kilos! It was devastating each time I step on those scales after a supposedly good workout. I just could not figure out why was that so.

I have to give credit to my trainer back then because he enlightened me and showed me the relationship between the 3 major nutrients our body needs and the calories yield. Now, do you know how many calories you yield when you consume one gram of protein, one gram of carbohydrates and one gram of fats?

Answer:

1g protein = 4 calories

1g of carbohydrates = 4 calories

1g of fats = 9 calories

Looking at the calories comparison above, it is not hard to understand why we should be cutting down on the consumption of fats. I have always thought that I was keeping a healthy diet till it dawned on me that I did not know what I was eating, do you?

Now back to my food list above, based on the information on calories yield, I will share with you more in my next postings to discover how seemingly healthy food may not be so after all.

Do not try to squeeze too many parties at one go, you will be stuffing yourself silly and are definitely prone to over-eating that will lead to subsequent weight gain.

2. Eat before you go
Yes, that’s right, eat before you go! Do not attend parties with an empty stomach. Have some fruits or light snack as you tend to eat more with an empty stomach. This should help starve off some mindless eating at the party.

3. Move around
Do not hang around at the food section, move around and mingle with other party goers if possible. This is a good way to network and keep yourself busy so that your focus would not be entirely on the food.
Of course, it take more than this to lose those excess fats built up as the battle of the bulge is a lifetime thing. How to start is the next thing to ponder over if you are serious in achieving what you have listed down in your New Year resolution, i.e. to lose weight!
