The broader meme coin market added $8BN in value during January’s first half

During the first half of January, the broader meme coin market gained around $8BN in total market cap, driven in part by improved confidence in the marketplace and progress in some of the leading meme coins, including PEPE and SHIB. New investors are flocking to meme coins, learning how to buy Shiba Inu on first-rate crypto exchanges by using the crypto fear & greed index, how to trade lower-cap tokens, and how to estimate when it’s the best time to sell. Clearly, there will be better moments to sell than January, for meme coin market sentiment is finally warming after a prolonged bear phase that commenced in October 2025. The latest addition of between $8BN and $10BN in value is caused by a rotation of funds into riskier assets, a trend that could lay the foundation for a market recovery, as some analysts believe.

Meme coins remain highly volatile, so if you want to break into the space, do it cautiously and responsibly.

The January rebound in crypto

The meme coin trading volumes rose to exceed 140MN by January 14, increasing almost twofold compared to the $70MN lows registered during a turbulent December. A day later, the meme coin market cap rejoiced over stable gains, climbing to roughly $45.5BN – a more than 8% monthly improvement. The market is bouncing back mainly due to an overall improving investor sentiment, with the value of cryptos like BTC, ETH, and SOL over 7% over the past month. A new flood of fresh meme coins is also contributing to the meme coin resurgence, remaining to be seen what they’ll lead to, since 2025 recorded the largest wave of failed token releases to date.

On 11 October, the market lost around $19BN in liquidations, hitting altcoins hardest and ushering in a risk-off period. Only four days later, however, the overall sentiment rebounded, with the “greed” index climbing to 61 – its first such performance since October – ending a risk-off phase that lasted since October. This evolution has coincided with a recent rally of Bitcoin.

Sentiment gauges are generally useful to better understand the market conditions and context rather than actionable insights. While extreme fear often emerges near market lows, periods of sustained greed historically appear closer to peaks. The current “greed” index signals a recovery in investors’ appetite for risky assets. Meme coins, with a total market cap of $45.1BN at press time, are benefitting from the renewed phase of greed and the overall crypto market rebound driven by Bitcoin. By market cap at the time of writing, the top contenders are:

  • Dogecoin (DOGE)
  • Shiba Inu (SHIB)
  • MemeCore (M)
  • Pepe (PEPE)
  • PUMP (PUMP).

Shiba Inu

Shiba Inu got off to a strong start in 2026, working to pivot from a meme coin into a serious tech project with a focus on utility. Shibarium, a L2 blockchain created to boost transaction speed, decrease fees, and cultivate an operational DeFi network, is at the forefront of this enhancement, and set to undergo a huge privacy upgrade. It will integrate Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE) via Zama by the second quarter of the year, a development aimed at allowing private transactions and confidential smart contracts and boosting the ecosystem’s functionality and security while potentially bolstering SHIB’s position by safeguarding sensitive user and contract data.

Privacy tools are in high demand among developers, who create apps that further create transactions. By making the network enterprise-ready, it may see increased usage, which is advantageous for the demand incurred by the blockchain’s native token SHIB.

Dogecoin

While Shiba Inu focuses on the technical infrastructure, Dogecoin is concentrating on commercial and regulatory achievements. House of DOGE, the commercial arm of the Dogecoin Foundation, went public on NASDAQ following a reverse merger, a move that resulted in a whopping $50MN in financing – part of which will be dedicated to buybacks and a “DOGE Treasury”. This institutional support has created a sustained “buy wall” the world hasn’t seen before.

Moreover, on-chain data disclosed rising conviction in DOGE, with over 220MN coins bought by DOGE whales by the end of 2025, purchases made in short bursts. Such an activity can cause the liquid supply to shrink since coins move from exchanges to cold wallets, and this can be advantageous for the DOGE price further on if demand rises – and the supply is already lower.

MemeCore

MemeCore has emerged as a surprise performer in early 2026, positioning itself as one of the first L1 blockchains designed to give meme tokens both economic and cultural value. It uses a new consensus model – “proof of meme” – and has been developed for the Meme 2.0 movement, aiming to transform memes into assets with their own governance structures.

It’s ranked #41 by market cap at press time, with a market cap worth approximately $2.72BN. The meme asset has shown remarkable resilience, gaining 6.4% on16 January while the rest of the market, Bitcoin included, was down.

Pepe

Pepe remains the purest representative of meme sentiment, leading the sector with a massive 50.3% weekly surge in early January. High-profile trader James Wynn, who famously backed the asset at a $600K market cap, expects PEPE to reach a $69BN value by late 2026.

It’s not the first time the trader has estimated surges in the asset’s price. This position sparked a massive speculative frenzy that led to an added $3BN in its market cap in a single session – and a rally of 34% in the following days.

The $8BN rise still demands carefulness

While the $8BN increase is notable, you should always consider the context. Meme coin rallies are historically fast-moving and driven by sentiment, and tend to outperform during early or speculative phases of a market cycle – as such, they can underperform when risk appetite fades. Several risks should thus remain top of mind:

  • Nonexistent fundamental valuation models. Meme coins don’t generate cash flows or protocol revenue in the traditional sense, so their valuation remains inherently subjective.
  • High volatility and drawdowns. Gains can disappear quickly if the sentiment shifts or broader markets weaken.
  • Increasing variety. As more meme coins break into the market, attention naturally disperses, increasing the likelihood of rapid rotation in other assets, rather than sustained growth.

For beginners and long-term investors, these characteristics call for caution.

For traders, they highlight how vital risk management actually is.
